For SATB choir and piano.
Commissioned by Vietnamese-American conductor Alexander Nguyễn. Believed to be the first choral work written (at least outside of Vietnam) by a Vietnamese composer using a poem by a Vietnamese poet, and conducted by a Vietnamese conductor, this work is a display of authentic Vietnamese sensibility applied to the medium of choral music.
Featuring the poetry of celebrated Vietnamese poet Hàn Mặc Tử, the poem describes the loss of a love as a devastating event, including comparing the scarlet color of a flower to blood, and the rain as tears. The words have been meticulously set so as to honor the Vietnamese language, following the contours of the tones so that a native speaker will have no trouble understanding what is sung.

Commissioned by Peninsula Cantare, directed by Jeffrey Benson. Written as the opener to Peninsula Cantare’s Into the Light concert, the work sets the timeless words of William Ernest Henley. The poem speaks of immense fortitude in the face of adversity, advocating for courage and strength rather than weakness and fear.

Featuring the poetry of German poet Jakob van Hoddis as well as the children’s song “Der Mond ist aufgegangen” by Matthias Claudius, the setting draws on the innocence of the latter to paint the calm night. People slept peacefully, not aware of the calamity to come. Suddenly, the winds howl and the waters roar, drowning the world in catastrophe.
